Quest for Truth: Unleash

"Claws Raised. Mouth Open.
It Was Coming for Her!"
Bookworm's Ranking - 4 Worms

Storyline - The adventure continues as Oliver, Tiffany, Mason, and Austin unravel the mystery surrounding their parents kidnapping and Ursprung. As they journey from planet to planet, more clues are found, more enemies are made and secrets are revealed. While struggling with all this, They also learn of an ancient truth of one who sacrificed himself to save the world and of those who still hold that truth. As thing get more dangerous and the come closer to their destination, their lives are in even more at risk then before. Can they stay out of the hands of the Ubel and Corsairs, save their parents, and discover the secret to eternal life?

Author - Brock Eastman

Publisher - P & R Publishing

Age Group - 14 and up

Content - *May Contain Spoilers* Lots of shoot outs as they fight to stay free and various enemies try to capture them. The kids lie at one point so those who took over their ship would not know what they had discovered about the mystery. The Wikks never leave each other behind and defend one another even when it could get them captured or in danger. Once they even put themselves on the line to save one of their enemies from death.

Personal Opinion - This was a nice edition to the story. The characters have grown, more determined and more capable of facing danger and always looking out for their friends, even when it might derail them from their journey. The is also a lot of action. That being said, this particular book felt like they were just running around from one spot to the next without much headway in the finding of Ursprung. *SPOILER* It was also not very believable when they shut the door in the face of a bad guy who had taken over their ship, held it shut until all the clues they had gathered were hidden and talking with each other on what to do with them, and then open the door and it was almost nonchalant as the bad guy walked in, found some fake clues they had hid and everything was find. This guy was supposed to be smart and devious and it barley phased him and he did very little to the kids who were obviously hiding something from him *END SPOILER*. So, there were believability issues and a lot of planet jumping. One thing that also just gets to me, and maybe this is just me, but, in stories where people convert who have never heard of Jesus in any way, convert on the spot with only a paragraph of explanation given to them, they just believe and it makes a difference to them, and the story they are given of his love and sacrifice is so general it isn't even specific on what happened. Those are not believable and even people who have believed in God for years find it difficult, challenging, and even face doubt. While this story gave me plenty to irritate me, I enjoy the adventure and think the idea of them finding the truth about eternal life intriguing also because I can see the hints dropped that the characters don't because I know the Bible and they don't. I look forward to reading the last two books and seeing how this wraps up.

Back to the Future Day!

Great Scott! Marty McFly, Doc Brown, and Jennifer fly into the future, October 21, 2015, today at precisely 4:29 PM. I have been enjoying the day by sharing stuff on my Facebook account and even found this video of Doc Brown sending out a little message for everyone today.

Isn't that cool. It also sums up the great story that is Back to the Future. Speaking of stories, one you can get today, was just released, is the comic book on how Doc and Marty met and some other great stuff. It is published by IDW publishers and written by Bob Gale, the original writer and creator of the trilogy.

(Picture copied for publishers website)

Awesome right? While I'm still waiting on flying cars, self sizing clothes, and trials that take two hours to complete, I don't have to wait for this. If, you are looking for more of a... book... type of read, maybe We Don't Need Roads: The Making of the Back to the Future Trilogy is what you are looking for. A behind the scenes look at the making of the movies. This is heavy.

(Picture copied from Amazon)

So I suggest making like a tree and getting out'a to your local book, or comic book, store. Or newsstand apparently. Still looking for this one myself.

(Picture copied from Entertainment Weekly)

While this does not cover all that is available on the Back to the Future trilogy, it is some good stuff.
Is there something else that has to do with this trilogy? Please share in the comments below. Me and everyone else would love to hear about it.

William Shakespeare's the Phantom of Menace

"O Threepio,
O Threepio,
Wherefore Art Thou Threepio?"
Bookworm's Ranking - 4 Worms

Storyline - The Trade Federation has taken over the peaceful planet of Naboo, trying to force its queen, Amidala, to sign a treaty to make their occupation legal, allowing innocents to die. With the help of two Jedi knights, the queen escapes but their ship is damaged and has to land on the lonely planet Tatooine for supplies. While there, the Jedi meet a boy, Anakin Skywalker, who might be the one to bring the Force into balance. As the Jedi try to help Anakin and take them with them, Naboo is in desperate need but it is unknown if the Republic will send aid in time to save its people.

Author - Ian Doescher

Publisher - Quirk Books

Age Group - 15 and up

Content - *May Contain Spoilers* Queen Amidala, Anakin, and the Jedi are determined to protect Naboo and do the right thing, even at the cost of their own lives. Jar Jar is a bit manipulative. Many of them just want peace.  They call on the Fates and the Force of support and help on numerous occasions.

Personal Opinion - A great retelling of the film in Shakespearian form. The known dialogue and actions are contain within the story as well as going into the thoughts and feelings of the characters as well as adding some small, additional arcs, such as Jar Jar Binks aside dialogue. I also appreciated two Jedi's who talked about seeing a pattern in the Force, mostly because it related to an observation my mom made about the movies but, if I say more I'll spoil it. I think the only thing I would have liked different is knowing what the prophesy is. For everything that is added and expanded upon, this explanation is still missing like it did in the movie. I hope someday to hear what the prophesy actually says besides people just referencing it. Still, a great read for those who like the movies yet would enjoy them told a little differently. (In fact, Squirmy, the Ty, enjoyed it so much, he tried using the force to levitate the book for the picture. Please don't tell him you see his tale.)

The First Principle

"If Inalienable Rights Begin with Life Itself,
Will Vivica have the Courage to Defend them,
No Matter What it Takes?"

Bookworm's Ranking - 3 Worms

Storyline - Vivica is an average teenage girl whose mother is a governor of the accepting, reformed world, were population is managed, exclusory views in religion are eradicated, and teenage girls don't have to worry about being pregnant because they are required to terminate. But when Vivica sees a fellow classmate try to hide her pregnancy and, later, discovers she's pregnant herself, she begins to question if she truly wants to follow through with the law and if it is really killing as the father says. She also has to decide if the rebels who follow the old Christian traditions are dangerous and bigots as the government says they are, or if there is more to them than meets the eye. Will Vivica protect her child and discover if the rebels are who they say they are, not what the government claims?

Author - Marissa Shrock

Publisher - Kregel

Age Group - 15 and up

Content - *May Contain Spoilers* Teenage pregnancies happen. There is a shooting and bombing. Christianity is considered narrow minded and exclusory and promotes bigotry. Christians stand up for what they believe in. Vivica asks important questions to determine the truth, doesn't just accept a view point because the government says so.

Personal Opinion - While this novel did a fine job of presenting beliefs and ideas of pregnancy for teenagers and women who already have two children, it didn't display why Christianity and its beliefs are discouraged, bigotry, and exclusivist. Vivica asked good questions and her questioning the government vs. religion which were believable. Something that really secured why Vivica question having an abortion more than just the father didn't want her to was that she was one of three triplets.  Some advice she also received about how God works in answering prayers was right on and beautifully told. But, the negative attitude toward Christians and the Bible was almost too straight forward, bordering on preachy. Something just seemed to be missing in how this information and the governments feelings toward Christians was missing. Still, others might find this novel more enjoyable than me and the author did create a good world where Christian beliefs are regulated, controlled, even changed, and pregnancy and "termination" is the norm if not also required under certain guidelines.

Crater Trueblood and the Lunar Rescue Company

"Crater Trueblood has to Rescue
his Ex-Girlfriend...
and the Entire Human Race."

Bookworm's Ranking - 2 Worms

Storyline - Crater is doing just fine, mostly, without Maria as he, Petro, and Crescent develop and work their new company, Lunar Rescue Company, saving wayward people out in the dust. Maria is also doing just fine, mostly, working in her grandfather's business. But when she is kidnapped, Crater runs off to find her with his friends in tow. The earth is being threatened and it might cost Maria, Crater, Petro, Crescent, and several more lives to save it.

Author - Homer Hickam

Publisher - Thomas Nelson

Age Group - 15 and up

Content - *May Contain Spoilers* Characters risk their lives to help others, even if they are not particularly fond of one another. Some recognized their mistakes and tried to overcome them. Torture happened several times. Death and destruction.

Personal Opinion - This is the end of the story of Crater and his friends. Sadly, I wasn't that impressed. There was a lot of action and stuff happening but that is all it felt like, stuff was happening that  was leading up to something, everything was prepatory. Now, that might seem like all books do that to a point but it didn't feel like it was building the story and characters. It almost seemed like the reader should already know the characters so they were not developed much. A lot of the information was detailed about the spaceships and their workings and there almost seemed like too many characters being followed so it broke up the story. There was also one question from book 2 to book 3 that I didn't get an answer too. The book did challenge the idea of love and what we do in desperation as well as sacrifice to save others. Plus, the Gillie's personality is still fun as ever and his conversations are charming. Still is not really recommended, though, because it was not a well told story.

Dark Eden

Bookworm's Ranking - 1 Worms
Storyline - On the alien, sunless planet they call Eden, the 532 members of the Family shelter beneath the light and warmth of the Forest’s lantern trees. Beyond the Forest lie the mountains of the Snowy Dark and a cold so bitter and a night so profound that no man has ever crossed it. The Oldest among the Family recount legends of a world where light came from the sky, where men and women made boats that could cross the stars. These ships brought us here, the Oldest say—and the Family must only wait for the travelers to return. But young John Redlantern will break the laws of Eden, shatter the Family and change history. He will abandon the old ways, venture into the Dark…and discover the truth about their world. (Copied from Goodreads.com)

Author - Chris Beckett

Publisher - Broadway Books

Age Group - 17 and up

Content - *May Contain Spoilers* When others didn't think or agree with the main character, he would ruminate how they are simple minded. Everyone seemed to have a problem with everyone else if they didn't agree with how they think things should be done or people behave. A physical romantic scene between a fifteen year old and a woman with several children. The protagonist risked his life to save another.

Personal Opinion - I didn't make it past the fifth chapter. My main issue with the story was the "slip" scene, fairly detailed, between a fifteen year old and older woman. For being what I thought a young adult book, this was unnecessary. Morally, I had a problem with this and is what caused me to stop reading the book (that and, according to other reviews by those who did finish the book, it sounded like there were going to be more of these scenes). Because I stopped reading the book, I have no idea what the author was trying to say about this stuff and might have had a good message about the whole "slip" thing but how it was going about the point was completely unnecessary. Before you think I'm just a prude, this is not the only reason I was frustrated with this book. For the first several pages, there was no description even though events were happening so it was hard to picture. Not only that, everything had different names than I am use to because it was a different planet so it was  confusing. The new language techniques, which I would have appreciated if it had been toned back a bit, were over used to the point they just became annoying instead of creative. The cover was very well done and represented well how the trees were suppose to give off light as well as the animals which I think sounds really cool. Having the characters reminiscent of caveman was fun and unusual. I am sorry I wasted mine, the author's, and publisher's time, though. This just teaches me once again I should research a book a little more before taking it.

Anomaly

"Question. Feel.
Believe."
Bookworm's Ranking - 3 Worms

Storyline - Thalli is not like the rest of her pod mates. She feels and is curious, traits the Scientist have taken out of others. But when she can on longer hid it, she is take to the scientist. But instead of being annihilated, she is tested. Things begin to be strange as she meets people who are allowed to feel and meets an old man who has strange ideas about a Designer who created everything. As tests continue, she begins to wonder what is real and not, what is true, and what is right.

Author - Krista McGee

Publisher - Thomas Nelson

Age Group - 15 and up

Content - *May Contain Spoilers* Thalli enjoys  (hangs out with) the company of a couple guys but is learning about God. Thalli lies a couple times. The Scientist lie and try to control others. Berk does what he can help Thalli.

Personal Opinion - The story was good. It had twists and turns that I didn't see coming and had interesting characters. I found the story to go a bit slow at first and was a bit contradictory on a couple of points at one point but that got cleared up with one of the twists in the story. I was concerned at first that it was going to be a lot like other Dystopias that have characters who aren't allowed to feel or think but this one was different. The details were well done so I was able to see most of the locations and the twists were new. I loved how Thalli spoke about music and compared things with it because she was a musician. But I couldn't seem to connect with the story. There were technical aspects that were done that I didn't like. But, I love Krista McGee's other books and this was an interesting read none the less.

Aquifer

"Truth Lies Just Below
the Surface."
Bookworm's Ranking - 2 Worms

Storyline - Luca has always been different. Being the son of the Deliverer who goes down once a year to the "Rats" in order to make a trade of light for the only water reserve known on earth is hard enough but knowing he will one day have to follow in his father's footsteps makes it worse. Especially when he can do nothing to help the innocent people who are hurt by his government. When Luca's father doesn't return from the exchange one year, he knows something is wrong and has to do something. But when it is revealed that his life is in danger too, he will have to make the decent and have his world, and conceptions, change forever.

Author - Jonathan Friesen

Publisher - Zondervan

Age Group - 15 and up

Content - *May Contain Spoilers* Kids disobeyed parents. Luca seemed more interested in the main girl because of how she looked at first which did change a little bit but still seemed to think of her physically. Fought as hard as they could against oppression. Broke the law to save another.

Personal Opinion - I thought the premise sounded really interesting for this book but I never got into it. The first chapter was actually enjoyable but then it kinda went down hill. The characters weren't developed enough for me and it seemed they were just running from one place to another. It felt the main character was reflecting on what happened the whole time, like he was telling this story that took place in the past and would make comments that brought me out of the story, such as "Another lie." The language, how the sentences were arranged or the new names for things, cause more confusion than anything else. It was just too strange for girls to be called "hers" and emotions to be called "wrinkles." Even though this is a dystopian society, it just seemed to go too far in change that wasn't believable.

Helium-3 Novel: Crescent

"She Was Born to Kill,
Born to Die."
Bookworm's Ranking - 4 Worms

Storyline - After a battle, Crater takes a crowhopper hostage. No one in Moontown is happy with the crowhopper, Crescent, but, as she learns more about the people, she begins to change her outlook on them. But, when someone is murdered, Crescent is accused and Crater has to find the truth to save her. Meanwhile, Maria is making great accomplishments in her family's business. But when an attempted kidnapping takes place, she will have to run for her life.

Author - Homer Hickam, Jr.

Publisher - Thomas Nelson

Age Group - 14 or 15 and up

Content - *May Contain Spoilers* Spurting blood at one point. Crater puts himself on the line multiple occasions to help others. Crescent is only seen as a "creature" by most people but we get to see she is more than that. Issues of how others should be treated come up.

Personal Opinion - The second novel in the Helium-3 series was fun. I engaged with it more than the first but there were a few occasions where wording of sentences irritated me. But, mostly, it was fun. The action sequences were well described and the characters were more interesting. But Crater seemed angrier than the first book which just seemed out of character for him, a little too much change from book 1. One of the most interesting parts was here all the moon locations. That gave it the creativity of a fantasy novel as well as a historical one because the moon does have names dedicated to places. Getting a little background on historical moon landings was sweet too, especially for someone like me who knows little of the moon but find it interesting. Call me strange, but I love the Author Notes at the end of the novels. I would read about events or things on the moon and find out in the Author Note that they are based on more reality than I thought. In the end, it was a fun read with a pretty well developed story. Looking forward to book 3.

The Safe Lands: Captives

"One Choice Could Destroy Them All."
Bookworm's Ranking - 4 Worms

Storyline - The village of Glenrock follows their Elder, Papa Eli, in living lives obedient to the teachings of the Lord and listen to his warnings to stay away from the Safe Lands and their destructive ways. But the Safe Lands are unable to have children without the Thin Plague and are willing to do whatever it takes to get some surrogates and donors who do not have the disease. So when Omar, one who is different to most of the men in Glenrock, betrays his people, the men and women are kidnapped to create uninfected children for the new lands. The Safe Lands are intriguing and new, catching their interest, yet something isn't right about this place. Several of the Glenrock work to find a way out but will it be enough and one of the Glenrock people, Mason, thinks he might be able to find a cure for the people.

Author - Jill Williamson

Publisher - Zondervan

Age Group - 16 and up

Content - *May Contain Spoilers* Women are required to artificially become pregnant and men have to donate. Some fights and shooting, characters die but the events are not graphic or gory. The characters enjoy the pleasures of the Safe Lands but they see where things are not right and try to get out. Lies are

Personal Opinion - The world was colorful and original and new, with new technology which was interesting and believable that one day we could get to that. The language was cool in how it changed from how we speak today. The characters were diverse and realistic, with real dreams and pains and struggles. There were a couple of times the character reactions didn't seem believable such as how they started enjoying the Safe Lands after being kidnapped, seen family killed and taken away, and told they will have children against their will yet don't fight too hard and eat the food and dress in their clothes. The pacing was good, moving a long and introducing the world pretty well as the story went. I found it a bit slow though but I can't seem to pin point what made it feel that way. Most of the reasons I come up with are all me so I'm leaning towards that is the reason. Still, Jill's books are good and this one was still interesting and the characters are good so I will be reading the next book in the Safe Lands series.

Swipe Series: Storm

"When the Storm Breaks,
No One Will be Able to Stop It."
Bookworm's Ranking - 4 Worms

Storyline - The Dust's biggest battle is about to start. Logan, Hailey, and Erin search for a cure to the coming sickness that is already infecting one of their own, but are waylaid by another threat, the lack of water, and head off to Lahoma to try to correct the problem. Blake and his gang are determined to find and save their friend who was taken by Acheron but are called upon to help solve the cause of the sickness. And the relationship between the world leaders is not what it appears. As the Dust race against time, everything is about to fall, but can they stop it in time?

Author - Evan Angler

Publisher - Thomas Nelson

Age Group - 13 and up

Content - *May Contain Spoilers* The friends stand by each other and fight for what is best for others. Several deaths take place.

Personal Opinion - Logan and the group keep fighting for truth and what is right, for the protection and safety of those not marked in the government. Many conspiracies are happening in this book and many people and stories are mixed in. There is one new character and story that was added that I wish had been introduced and followed from the first book. This book was pretty well told but I also felt there were too many summaries which made it a little slow and some of the characters acted in such a way that I didn't find believable. For being the final book in the series, I don't like it is over. Perhaps that is because I prefer happier endings than I felt this one had and it all came together a little too close to the end. But it is also a dystopia so I probably can only expect so happy an ending. If you have read Swipe and Sneak, you will want to know how it all comes together. I personally hope the story goes one, if not in this series, than a spin off one.

Mech Mice: Genesis Strike

"Ears Up, Mice!"
Bookworm's Ranking - 4 Worms

Storyline - Ziro has dreamed of nothing else but being part of the Elite, mice charged with protecting the shards that give them their intelligence, and move out of his half-brother's shadow. But, his misfit crew isn't exactly up to Elite standards. Yet, a chance comes to prove themselves with a routine mission up in the Liwa region. Shortly after departure, it becomes clear that this mission is anything but routine and will take everything they have to rescue a colony, over come a deadly plot, and come home alive.

Author - The Miller Brothers, based off an idea by Lance Priebe

Publisher - Spearhead Books

Age Group - 12 and up

Content - *May Contain Spoilers* The mice are determined to do the right thing and protect the colonies and each other, even at the cost of themselves. There is some rivalry between two mice and they hate each other but one starts to see things in a new light.

Personal Opinion - A fun, light read. The mice go on a crazy adventure and fight evil and try to do good as well as defend the innocent. There was even something of a conspiracy idea going on in the book which was interesting. There was also a scene that hinted at a higher being and it was done in such a way that it reminded me of something that happened and was said in a Star Wars movie. The characters were nicely developed but I feel they could have been deeper. I am interested in where this story goes from here and will check out the accompanying video game when it comes out.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay

"The Final Installment!"
Bookworm's Ranking - 4 Worms

Storyline - Katness Everdeen has escaped from the Quarter Quell and has been taken to the rebel's base. But she has no interest in helping their cause, especially with Peeta in the hands of the Capital. Yet they want her to be the symbol of their rebellion and motivate the fighting. As the rebellion escalates and the Capital become fiercer, she will have to make many choices on what she will do as the fighting rages around her, people she loves being threatened, and freedom on the line.

Author - Suzanne Collins

Publisher - Large Print Press, a part of Gale, Cengage Learning; Published in 2012 by arrangement with Scholastic, Inc (Info from Copyright page)

Age Group - 16 and up

Content - *May Contain Spoilers* Lots of killing. Katniss kills in cold blood once or twice and is unsettled by at least one. She wants to preserve life and doesn't like the idea of treating the Capital people the same way they treated her. Gale is ready to take down the Capital, no matter the cost or way he has to do it. Katniss begins to come to peace and leaves behind the hate and revenge she desperately wanted throughout the book.

Personal Opinion - The final book in the Hunger Games Trilogy and it is a doosy. A lot of killing, not terrible graphic but some of it got to me, and Katniss filled with hatred and revenge. Definitely darker than the first two. I get that people do really feel those things but I wish she had come around to peace for a long time (just within the last few pages) which is what redeemed it a bit for me. I was getting really frustrated with her and even came to a point of not liking her but Katniss seemed to come to a satisfactory conclusion in the end for me. But I did like how, even though they were at war, she believed in a limit to the killing and how where others were going far and willing to act how the Capital acted to over come them. Katniss's respect for life was something I really appreciated, not just for this book but for the whole series. The thing I disliked for the series was how Katniss turned to the idea of suicide as a good means to a problem on multiple occasions. Something about this book didn't grab me like the last two and I wish I had a chance to see Katniss a bit more healed before the book ended.

Determined to get to Beacon to find his lost sister, he receives help form fellow Markless as he travels halfway across the country as well as learn of a God no one speaks of since the Total War. Erin is also on a mission. What did Logan find to go crazy like he did at his Pledge? As she digs deeper, she discovers something she never imagined possible. Will Logan find his sister? And, if he does, what then?

Author - Evan Angler

Publisher - Thomas Nelson

Age Group - 12 and up

Content - *May Contain Spoilers* Ready to sacrifice themselves at any moment to help others who were in danger. One crazy couple who want to hurt some Markless. Both the Markless and the Marked stereotype each other with names and generalized ideas but some of them start to see things differently.

Personal Opinion - Wow. Book one was good. Intriguing and exciting situations. Book two is better. I entered the story on page one and every page after that. I got to know the characters even better, they really came alive, and their struggles and mission was something I latched onto. Believable in ever sense, characters, the future world, the government, everything. The Christian elements that also came out of this dystopia was perfectly done. I especially like how it was all underground and there was a Underground-Railroad with Christian symbols to it. The only thing that disrupted the story for me was something with the ending. It wasn't the content but it seemed at the end to give little snippets of events after the main action was over which didn't flow nicely for me. Still, a totally enjoyable book. If I was excited after book 1, I'm psyched now and am eagerly waiting for book 3.
